In-use Test:

The Varta F30 LED Outdoor Sports Torch/Flashlight has nice grippy non-slip rubber sheath around the body with a 'tread' built into it for even more grip (a bit like a car tyre). There is a lanyard that will go around your wrist - but should you drop it before securing the lanyard - we found this torch will survive several 2m drops on to a concrete patio without any ill effects.

It is also water resistant to IPX4 which means it is resistant to water splashes from any direction but not total immersion. We found it could be left on wet grass for several hours without any degradation in performance.

On the high setting, the light itself is really, really bright. Too bright really for anything other than moving about outside in darkness. The low setting was more suited to rummaging around in our tent, the boot of the car and other enclosed places.

The Varta F30 LED Outdoor Sports Torch/Flashlight is powered by 3 x Type C batteries (a.k.a. R14 batteries) that are included in the packaging. Once these run out, the torch will take any Type C rechargeable batteries to help save a little money and the planet.

We thought the claimed runtime of 120 hours was a little bit optimistic - after 120 hours the torch was still lit but too dim to be of much use.

One nice touch is the photoluminescent material on head. This glow-in-the-dark material means that the torch is easy to locate in the dark - an absolute boon.

Another nice touch is the built in bottle opener built into the battery cover. Who ever thought of a glow-in-the-dark bottle opener for camping (wait-a-moment, there's an idea!).

Buying Advice:

The Varta F30 LED Outdoor Sports Torch/Flashlight is a good solid torch/flashlight perfect for camping, keeping in the boot of the car or in the under stairs cupboard for that odd occasion when the lights fuse. It glows in the dark so is easy to find and has a really bright light that lasts.
