In-use Test:
The Healthy Back concept is about a bag design that addresses the weight distribution issues associated with one strap bags. As such I think they are primarily an alternative to more leisure oriented day packs which are great if used correctly but which many people anchor by a strap over one shoulder. Having spent many years lugging lap tops, books papers etc in that way, I am testament to the long term problems that this can cause!
So with this in mind I was interested to look at one of the smaller Healthy Back Bags as an 'apres' hill walk alternative to my voluminous hand-bag and also for more general urban walking as a change from a more conventional daypack.
The bag I had on test was the small size from the Earth range - in which the bags are made from re-cycled PET - the material often used to make plastic bottles.
This size was more than adequate for the 'essentials?!" I usually have with me on a day-to-day basis including a light-weight waterproof jacket. What's particulary useful is the range of various shaped pockets on the exterior and inside the bag which allow you to really organise the contents. There are 4 external pockets of various sizes - 3 with zips, one with a velcro closure. Inside there is a key ring, 1 zipped pocket (big enough for a large purse) plus 6 others of various sizes and orientation. (My challenge initially was remembering exactly where I'd put everything.)
There is a full length zip which for security is always against your body. The zip is double which means you can open it exactly where needed to get at the stuff inside. I found it really quite easy to access the inside whilst I was wearing the bag by just it moving it around to the front.
And yes - it is indeed very comfortable to wear. Its shape (described as a teardorp) does appear to distribute weight along the length of the bag rather than pulling on one shoulder. When it's worn over your back, your hands are free and I found I could easily swing my arms when walking. On rare occasions I did wear it for short periods of time over one shoulder - and it does stay in place well.
This Earth Healthy Back Bag, with its eco-friendly credentials, is an interesting, flexible and very comfortable alternative to a conventional daypack for urban walking and more general leisure/commuting use.
