In-use Test:
Nobody with any sense would venture into the high hills without the proper walking map for the area from the Ordnance Survey - and if you have ever been caught in a rain storm you'll appreciate just how useful the Aqua3 coating on your map can be.
If you allow an ordinary paper map to get even remotely wet or damp it soon tears and starts to fall apart (particular since rain is often accompanied by wind!)
The Aqua3 coating can be applied to any paper map and ensures the integrity of the map remains in tact whatever the conditions. It won't tear or rip yet remains flexible - allowing you to study your position in driving wind and rain and navigate your way back to safety/a refuge.
You can also write on the surface with a pencil and then wipe it clean later.
Maps with the Aqua3 coating are usually about twice the cost of paper maps - but they will last twenty times as long - and if you ever really need to use a map in anger in deteriorating conditions - it might just save your life!
And if you already have a large collection of maps and don't want to buy another set - Aqua3 can laminate these for you for a small fee.
The only downside is that the coating adds to the weight and bulk of each map - which may be important for long distance back-backing trips.
A possible solution is to cut your map into strips covering just the areas you need - or better still, cut cheaper paper maps up and ask Aqua3 to laminate these strips for you.
Almost indestructible. Won't tear or rip yet remains flexible. This process can be applied to any paper map. Having said that they are heavier and bulkier than ordinary maps which might be significant on a multi-day back packing trip. (But even this feature helps stop them blowing away in high winds!)

• Well there is no point in commenting on the quality of the map itself as everyone knows you can't better the iconic OS maps. These waterproof maps are great for trip organisers, stewards, leaders as they are completely weatherproof. One of the advantages being they don't tear at the folds. For the walker I wouldn't use one as they are too bulky and you can't fold them back on themselves so easily and stick them inside a map carrier or pocket as conveniently.
