In-use Test:
The Survivor from Griffin Technology is a protective case for an iPhone 4 - it won't fit earlier models. It has an internal frame which is covered (front, back and sides) with silicone padding plus a transparent shield at the front via which you use your iphone controls.
It's apparently demonstrated compliance with the appropriate US/UK military standards - so to say this is designed to be a 'robust' case is a wild understatement.
My first challenge was actually getting an iPhone into it. In fact you have to first remove the silicone padding (by stretching it and just pulling it off) after which you can open the internal case to insert the iPhone. Yes - this is quite straightforward but had this 'bear-of-little-brain' flummoxed for quite a while.
There's a robust belt clip which rotates so that the iPhone can be at whichever orientation is most convenient. This can go either on the back or the front ie the iphone can face in or out. I discovered that this clip also functions as a stand for the phone if you need to set it down to watch a video etc.
The keys on the phone were quite usable via the front shield. There are three little flaps in the silicone that you lift to access the on/off button, the ear-phone socket and to use the camera. The only real annoyance I had was that the flap you lift in order to use the camera has to be held open - which did make taking pictures pretty awkward.
Our testing of the case's robustness was rather more 'limited' than that carried out by the manufacturer! - amounting to dropping the case onto a stone step. Safe to say - it stood up to that. However, when dropped into water (an ongoing preoccupation for me on most walking trips) - some water did find it's way in - I assume via the various access points for earphone leads etc. To be fair to the manufacturer, though, they don't claim that it's totally waterproof so immersion in water is a little unfair.
Perhaps not the most attractive looking cover and also a little bulky for everyday use, but if you're after very robust, physical protection on your walking trips for your iPhone 4, (and you don't use your phone's camera too often) then Griffin Technology's Survivor may be for you.
