Vango says:"New for 2014, our Dry Bag Set offers a variety of sizes to protect your essentials when trekking, cycling, kayaking, climbing, commuting or travelling. Made from tough, durable fabrics the set are perfect for lining your rucksack, keeping your sleeping bag dry, storing wet kit or keeping valuables safe from exposure to water."

Features to Note:

In-use Test:

Unless your rucksack is specifically designed to be waterproof - and not many are - then you can be sure that when the heavens open and you get thoroughly soaked, then your gear is going to get damp as well - whether or not you remember to use the rain cover (and it stays on when it is blowing a hoolie).

For this reason I have always stowed my gear inside a waterproof plastic bag before putting it in my rucksack. I have usually opted for one of those strong garden refuse sacks but they are not cheap and you cannot close them properly to try and get them watertight and, sooner or later, they split.

And - of course - you only find out it has split because your gear is all wet!

This excellent Dry Bag Set from Vango comprises 3 different sized bags that are made from Excel 75D Ripstop Polyester with PU coating so they are not only lightweight and waterproof, but will not split either.

You place your gear in the bag and roll the top over three or four times and then clip the two ends together to keep it secure. You then put the bag containing your gear into your rucksack knowing that next time you want it it will be nice and dry (like a warm extra layer) and things like your phone and torch will work when you really need them.

I have been using the large one for my spare layers, gloves, hat, spare socks, first-aid kit and torch and the smaller one for my phone, car keys, wallet and personal locator beacon during the autumn deluges and they have worked perfectly.

Furthermore, rather than just keeping things dry, you can put wet items inside one of these bags to keep them from soaking all your other gear. The large one is certainly big enough for a small wet tent.

Now I wouldn't go anywhere without them.

Buying Advice:

Really useful for camping or when on day walks - great way of keeping important gear dry and/or separating already wet gear from your dry stuff, Vango's Dry Bags are just all-round useful!

• I bought a cheaper version in Pately Bridge Nidderdale a few months ago, it is great very strong and easy to use, if your in the area pop in.
