- Made from medical-grade, silicone based polymer
In-use Test:
Earcandi custom moulded earplugs/earphones are created from a medical grade silicone polymer which when mixed with a 'fixer' produces an 'earplug' moulded precisely to your ear.
The process is very simple. You knead the two parts together for about a minute, divide the resulting 'play-doh' like flexible mixture into two parts and then mould it around each earphone already positioned in your ears.
After about 10 minutes, the Earcandi mixtures sets and you have two ear plugs with your earphones embedded in them that uniquely fit your ears.
Once set, the mixture cannot be remoulded.
I found this process to be quick, simple and straight-forward. The silicon mixture does leave a waxy residue on your hands and your ears but this soon washes off. I did the mixing and moulding in front of the bathroom mirror to make sure I got a good fit and I didn't get any of the polymer on my clothes or in my hair.
Earcandi claim they will never, ever fall out and they don't. I've been using them for long walks in the Derbyshire Peaks and for treadmill work in the local gym and they have yet to fall out a single time. I've tried them when it's been raining & snowing and when I've been working hard and building up a sweat. They don't fall out. You can even give a little tug on the earphone cable and they stay in place. (If you do need to pop them out, a quick, sharp tug on the earphone wire does the trick.)
One drawback we found was that any interference with the earphone cable (if it rubs against your waterproof jacket for example) is transmitted up the cable to the earphones where it is amplified.
The folks at Earcandi also suggest that the polymer can be used to fabricate noise-reducing earplugs but we found this to be much less successful. Whilst the Earcandi earphones don't fall out, in our experience they do very little to stop ambient noise.
In our experience, this system works pretty well and earplugs customised with the Earcandi polymer do not fall out. However, there are quite a lot of earphone designs on the market, many of which have clips that go behind the ear to keep them in place. If these don't suit you, or you have a favourite pair of earphones that occasionally fall out then you should give Earcandi a go.

• Great product - I would personally use this product for surfing - Frequent surfers use products like this to protect the inner ear against a condition called Surfers ear which can seriously damage your hearing. Moulded products are on the market for surfers but this is a better cheaper option 8-)
