Snugbug are a company based in Northumberland who specialise in head-gear, scarves and wrist-warmers. Their wool hats are made using wool sourced from New Zealand and made by hand in Nepal, where the company makes efforts to ensure good and fair conditions for their workers.
The Thick Rib Bobble Hat I've tried felt substantial and was knitted using thick yarn in an attractive, muted combination of colours; it has a polyester fleece lining at ear height. This is a one-size-fits-all garment - but I think the 50cms circumference (at the bottom edge) will fit most head sizes. For me, it was a great fit and sat nicely over my ears (essential in a hat for me!) and down over the back of my neck.
It's certainly lovely and warm - too warm, in fact, for really high energy stuff although the fleece lining does help a little in keeping perspiration off the wool. The (possibly oversized) bobble is a bit of a nuisance under a jacket hood and does make the hat impractical under a tight fitting hood or cycling helmet. I'm no knitting expert, but I guess this hat was knitted on quite big needles - it's not tightly knitted so isn't windproof per se other than in relatively light breeze. Leaving that aside, it rolls up into a reasonably small size and I've found it really useful for some extra warmth when stopping for lunch or other short breaks during my recent trips around Kinder.
As it's wool, you can't chuck it the washing machine with the rest of the 40 deg wash - this needs hand washing and air drying.
A hat is a really important part of winter walking gear - somehow with your head warm, the rest of your body feels warmer too! If you're a wool fan, then Snugbug's Thick Rib Bobble Hat is definitely worth a look. Might be too warm for high energy sections on your winter walks but really great for keeping your head warm during lunch or other breaks. Also a splendid option on the walk back to the B&B or campsite from the pub . . . and for more general use in cold weather. It will definitely keep your head nice and warm when the temperature is low.
