In-use Test:
Personally I've not invested at this level (ca £150) in sunglasses before - so I was really very interested to try out the Banyans from Maui Jim. So I've been trying out a pair (in Gloss Black with grey lenses) for walking, cycling, driving ... and even gardening in some unusually hot (and sunny!) UK Spring conditions.
And yes - I must say I really do like them. They are certainly extremely light and very comfortable - even when worn for most of the day. I'm female with (I think) a fairly standard face - I found the Banyan's fitted very well. (A male colleague has also tried them - and they appeared to fit him very easily as well.) They really do stay in place and - even when my face was hot and sweaty - there was no annoying tendency to slip down my nose at all.
Probably the most important feature in sunglasses for all-day walking or cycling trips is the performance of the lens system and I must say I thought this was where the Banyans really did out-perform my usual (cheaper) sunglasses. Right through the day, the clarity and contrast were excellent and I wasn't conscious of glare even in conditions when the sun was lower. The frames have small slits along the top which do a really good job in preventing any misting or fogging.
When I first started wearing them, I was a little aware of the bridge piece. However, I'm now not conscious of this at all so it's not proved to be a problem. The wrap-around design also ensured that there was no glare from the side - a great advantage when driving.
I think the rectangular shape is likely to be acceptable to both men and women. Expensive yes - but Maui-Jim's Banyans are are an impressive pair of sunglasses for many outdoor pursuits - especially walking, driving - and for more general, everyday use.
