In-use Test:
Vango's 1W Red Eye torch is very light weight with one main LED giving a good, clean, bright light, two smaller LEDs as a lower power option plus two red LEDs.
There are two simple buttons on its top - one controlling the white light high/low power options and the second for the red light. (There's supposed to be a 'flashing' option but I've yet to establish how to get this to operate!) It does have three tilt options although I found I had to hold my head in a slightly odd position to read something (ie my OS map) I was holding so the third tilt position could do with being at a slightly bigger angle - however this wasn't a major issue. The battery compartment is readily accessible. All the controls are easy to use even when wearing gloves.
It comes with an easily adjustable strap (which could go over a helmet); I found it stayed in position well and was very comfortable when I was wearing it. It also fits easily into a jacket or backpack pocket.
The manufacturer claims that with the 3 AAA batteries, the bulb should last roughly 60 hours (on low power) - but it's not clear whether this is 60 hours of usable light or 60 hours to the point of extinction!. However this would suggest that there is a pretty reasonable amount of time of usable light. I will report back when I've had time to check this out. In any case, there is a useful battery indicator on the front.
If I had any criticism, it may be that the casing feels a little insubstantial - but then it is really light weight and that's also an important consideration for me.
Well priced, functional yet light weight - Vango's 1W Red Eye is a smashing little torch for general night time use whether you're walking or camping.
