In-use Test:
Timouts' Camping guide features an interesting - in fact quite eclectic - collection of camp sites. The sites covered are diverse - ranging from the extremely basic to those boasting facilities which are the ultimate in 'glamping'. (We're talking hot-tubs here!) As well as sites catering for camping with tents, caravans or motorhomes, it also includes information on sites providing camping holidays in pre-erected yurts* or tipis.
What the sites have in common, though, is that they are all in beautiful, unspoilt locations - near beaches or lakes, woods or forests, beneath mountains or in secluded valleys.
The consistent, clear layout is illustrated with excellent photography that tries to convey both the look and feel of the camp site and its surroundings.
There is a handy summary of the key features (size, price, opening periods, type of camping allowed, overview of facilities/restrictions, how to get there) which is easy to find at the start of each site entry. Next there is an interesting and well written overview of the site and its location which is followed by a summary of the options for eating/drinking and local attractions plus a paragraph on 'entertaining the kids'. Each site's review is completed with a useful little section summarising its best and worst features.
Finding your way around the guide is very straightforward. There is a series of maps showing the location of all the sites covered. The main guide is organised by county and there is an A-Z index at the back.
* A Yurt is a large, round semi-permanent tent often associated with Central Asia or Mongolia.
Although Timout's Camping guide features many sites that are great for singles, couples or backpackers, the consistent level of detail on ways to entertain children will make it particularly appealing to families. Overall, though, it's a great reference for would-be campers who want to enjoy some truly beautiful locations.
