Silva invented the first liquid filled compass in the 1930's and after decades in the industry, Silva products continue to be No 1 in the marketplace. The Silva Compass has been voted 45th in ‘The top 100 gadgets of all time' in Mobile Magazine – the leading US mobile technology magazine.
Competing against fun gadgets such as the Rubik's cube ranking 89th and Texas Instruments Speak & Spell ranking 46th, to more functional gadgets such as the abacus in 60th place and the Microscope at number 53, the Silva compass shows it worth.
Mobile magazine commented, “Silva invented the gold standard of compasses, which everyone from Boy Scouts to the military all over the world still rely on.”
The aim of the hunt was to find best 100 gadgets that have electronic or moving parts, which can be used on their own and are mobile. Second place went to the remote control, just beaten by the Apple Powerbook 100, which was given first place in the top 100 gadgets of all time.
