Paramo says:"Using Parameta® A, our rapid evaporation fabric, the Maui Cargo Trousers protect you from the sun, wind and biting insects whilst providing active cooling by using every last drop perspiration to cool you. Light yet durable, and supremely comfortable, the Maui Cargo Trousers will easily face the challenges of all your summer activities."
In-use Test:
The material is very soft to touch and slides up and down your leg really smoothly. As you'd expect from Paramo, the moisture management of the fabric was excellent so these were a very comfortable pair of trousers no matter how hot the temperature was. The fabric didn't appear to repel rain at all but the trousers dried very quickly so that wasn't too much of a problem.
The waist isn't stretchy nor is it lined but the trousers do come with a substantial belt, which does brings me on to the sizing which I did find a little odd. I usually need a waist-size of 36ins. However I needed waist size of 38ins in the Maui-s - and even then I found the trousers to be a little tight around the hips - particularly with anything in the pockets. Because, I think, of this bigger size it did feel like there was a lot of material around the lower leg.
Nonetheless, the freedom of movement generally was excellent whether walking on the flat or negotiating stiles.
There are a good selection of pockets. There are two on the front at the hip. I thought these were positioned quite high which meant it was a a bit awkward getting my hands in and out. However this also meant that the contents were less likely to fall out.
There are also two back pockets both of which are zipped.
At the front there are two cargo style large pockets which usefully are big enough to accommodate a folded OS map. These closed by means of a button fastening which was a bit fiddly particularly with gloved hands but on the plus side is therefore quite secure.
Finally at the front there's a pocket for a standard mobile phone. Unfortunately - it's just not big enough for either a smartphone or a gps which in my recent experience does seem to be a problem common to many manufacturers at the moment.
The selection of pockets is completed by a half-size, zipped 'secret' pocket in one of the cargos - which was very handy for the car keys.
The Mauis washed well and dried really quickly - there is in fact a hook on the back for hanging them up.
Because of the waist sizing, I suggest you ignore the size on the label and get a pair that fit. For that reason, these are perhaps not the best item to buy mail order. Leaving that aside, whilst a tad expensive these are an extremely comfortably, quality pair of trousers with excellent freedom of movement. Although not really suitable for heavy duty scrambling they are otherwise a really fine all round walking trouser for summer.
