In-use Test:

I've worn the Mammut Sunset zip-off walking trousers on several day's mountain walking in Scotland - and have been very impressed.

They fitted well at the waist and sat well over my boots - and without any surplus material left to flap around. The unlined waist-band, which fastens with a popper and has belt-loops, isn't stretchy which I thought would be a problem but proved not to be so.

I walk a lot so my legs are relatively 'muscle-ly' and I've found that walking trousers are often a little tight. Whilst I thought initially this would be also an issue with these trousers, this wasn't so. They glide on very easily and fitted well along the length of my leg. An added bonus was that the zip (for the conversion to shorts) is hardly noticeable when walking at all - and in my experience this is really unusual in zip-offs. The only downside with the conversion to shorts is that - as the bottom of the trousers isn't adjustable - I had to take off my boots to get the trouser legs off.

Despite the fact that the fabric isn't stretchy, the freedom of movement during a number of long, high mountain walks with some light scrambling was very good.

There are two front, unzipped, pockets deep enough for a wallet or a GPS - the positioning meant it was easy to retrieve things from them. There's smaller pocket with a velcro closure at the front and also a handy back pocket with a zip closure.

The fabric repelled rain for a short while but then wetted - however it was also extremely quick drying

Buying Advice:

Whilst the lack of re-inforcement around knees, seats or ankles means these wouldn't be the best choice for more challenging scrambling, these are a very comfortable pair of trousers for more general summer walking. Their light weight and stylish cut also makes them a great option as leisure wear. Certainly consider them if you're looking for a flexible addition to your summer walking wardrobe.
