In-use Test:
Vaude Day Packs and Back Packs are well respected in the outdoor market and with good reason. The Vaude Brenta 30 has a capacity of 30 litres which is plenty of room for a packed lunch, waterproofs and an extra layer. The Vaude Brenta 30's back size can be adjusted from XS to XL to suit your particular body length - I found the XL setting best for me but it is worth experimenting with a fully loaded pack to find the best setting for you. It deals with keeping you back area dry and ventilated using Vaude's unique Aeroflex back system. This holds the pack away from the body and allows air to flow not only across your back area but high up on the shoulders as well. Furthermore, the distance that the bag is held away from your torso can be adjusted so you can get your perfect setting. I am 5' 10" and stockily built and out on the hill, I found this worked pretty well and kept my back and shoulders dry and well ventilated without any adjustment. At the same time, the back portion has good in-built reinforcement to stop it falling out of shape under load. To test this I purposely packed it poorly but still found nothing digging into my back and causing discomfort. The lumber region is well padded and comfortable as is the waist belt which includes large cutaway areas to aid comfort. The right hand belt portion includes a small, zipped, knick-knacks pocket. The Vaude Brenta 30 has a large zipped lid pocket that includes a zipped inner mesh compartment that includes a key loop. These pockets are plenty big enough for an OS map and a small first aid kit. I stowed all my 'need them quickly' items in here - gloves, hat, emergency chocolate fix - and it handled them with ease. Inside there is a compartment to house a water bladder complete with a strap to stop it from falling to the bottom of the bag. The opening for the refreshment tube is located over the right shoulder and this was big enough to get the mouthpiece through (which is not always the case). The lid is closed using two buckles and there is a zip on the outside allows access to the main compartment without having to open the top lid. Outside there are two deep, stretchy side pockets perfect for a drinks bottle or banana, and a larger stretchy back pocket ideal for waterproofs or a map. There are two compression straps to tighten everything up and two walking pole/ice axe loops and securing toggles. The main compartment of the Vaude Brenta 30 is made from 210 D HT Maxi Ripstop Polyurethane coated 100% Polyamide and will take some rough treatment and will keep out the worst of the weather. But rain and wind will get through some of the openings, zips and gaps so there is a rain cover made from 100% Polyamide to keep all your belongings nice a dry.
The Vaude Brenta 30 is not the lightest 30 litre day pack on the market but is superbly built and has all the features any self-respecting walker would need. It is fully adjustable, comfortable and a joy to wear on the hill. Recommended.
