Base map for using GPS function without cell access
Q. When do you expect this app will be available? I am walking the Coast to Coast in Sept. I want digital base maps for my phone. I would like to use just the GPS function without cell access. Which base maps and which app should I get? I've looked at Anquet and OS. I am sort of confused about what to do. Can you help clearing this up for me and making a recommendation? I have downloaded go4awalk GPS waypoints for the walk . . .

A. go4awalk Mobile is available now - just point your Phone browser at www.go4awalk.com ... and it will detect if if you're using an Android phone and show the correct version. There isn't an app per se.
As far as I'm aware, on most standard cell phones it is not possible to use the GPS functionality without cell access. There may be some phone units available where this is possible - but I do not know of one.
To be perfectly honest, we do not recommend using Mapping Software on your Mobile Phone as your only navigation tool; it can significantly diminish your battery - and once your battery power is spent - not only do you not know where you are - you can't call for help. Not a great situation in which to find yourself!
We recommend using paper maps and a compass for navigation (if you do not know how then you really should learn) and save your mobile phone for emergencies. GPS Waypoints are great as an additional aid to navigation - but if you want to use them them, buy a dedicated GPS Device and use rechargeable batteries along with a set of spares.
Hope that helps . . .
