Are OS Coordinates on your Walk Maps
Q. Hello Please could you tell me the OS Coordinates for walk c453? Many thanks
Danielle Hoggett, Ilkley
A. All our walks that have an accompanying GPS and GPX file have OS Grid References marked on them at all the numbered decision points.
These OS Grid References however are written as two letter and two groups of five digit waypoints and are accurate to 1m.
To convert the two letter and two groups of five digit waypoints to the traditional two letter and two groups of three digit OS Grid Reference (accurate to 100m), remove the last two numbers of each group.
For example. the start of Walk c453 The Scafell Mountains from Wasdale Head, Wast Water, the National Trust Campsite in Wasdale, is marked as NY 18232 07484.
To convert that GPS reference to an OS Grid Reference, take off the last two numbers of each group of five to get NY 182 074 (NY 18232 07484).
Since the 4th digit of the 2nd group is 5 or higher then it would be more accurate to round the 074 up to 075.
Incidentally, some grid references are given and two letters and two groups of four digits - eg NY 1823 0748. These references are accurate to 10m.
Hope this helps . . .
