Using A GPS with a Paper Map of the Southern Upland Way
Q. I'm from the US and plan to hike the Southern Upland Way in April/May. I have the maps from Roger Smiths guide. After some research I think I understand the reference grid to find locations on the map. My question is how to set my GPS to display these coordinates or even if is possible to do. I have a Garmin Fortrex 301. This device is simple and can display locations, waypoints, speed and such but it does not display topographic maps. What position format and map datum should I set into the GPS to display the ordnance survey grid for location?

A. In case you don't have a manual:- After turning on the Foretrex 301, press the Page button 3 times to get to the options page. Select Setup, then select Units. Then, as Mike says, set Position Format = BRITISH, Map Datum = Ord Srvy GB.

A. Not sure which maps your guide uses but to set your GPS to display UK Ordnance Survey Grid References you should set it to Position Format = British Grid and Map Datum = ord srvy GB
Full details on how to do this on a Garmin Fortrex 301 will be in the manual (try the 'Set Up' screen).
Hope this helps . . .
