In-use Test:
The Bergflette is another in Bergans' range of Tecnowool garments. Tecnowool is a mix of organic wool and synthetics which produces a slightly stretchy fabric feeling like a robust wool but with a very soft fleece-like interior. The styling of the Bergflette has a rather 'retro' appeal ... a little bit different to many contemporary garments of this ilk.
Body and sleeves are a good, generous length and both bottom hem and cuffs are elasticated for a nice, cosy fit. There's also a rather good hood which can be drawn in around the face with a simple lace-like tie around its edge. Once up - and with the generously baffled, full-length zip fastened - I found that I was really comfortable throughout a long day's walking on the South Downs on a fine end-of-March day in temperatures around 5-6 deg C. (I was wearing the Bergflette over a decent baselayer.) The breathability was fine; there are no pit zips so any temperature regulation was via opening the front zip and/or rolling up the sleeves. The fleecy lining on the inside of the two pockets at the front meant that my hands could be warmed up easily even when wearing a backpack/daypack. The cut and slight stretch in the Tecnowool fabric meant that the freedom of movement was excellent.
This is basically a wool garment so needs to be washed and dried as such. The only downsides in what is otherwise a quality garment is its weight and its relative bulkiness. (On a more stylistic note, I did feel that the branding is a little OTT; there's the characteristic Bergan's 'badge' on one arm AND on the left side of the front ....!)
Overall though - this has become one of my favourites for both lower level walking and more general wear when some extra warmth is required.
Whilst it may be a little bulky to keep as standard at the bottom of your backpack/daypack 'just in case', Bergan's Bergflette is great for casual wear and also a fine midlayer for toasty warmth - with an outer shell in wind or rain.
