In-use Test:
The Valdres Light Insulated Vest from Bergans of Norway is an extremely lightweight, padded gilet that zips up the front; it has two good size pockets at the side front (one of which serves as its own 'stuffsac') plus a collar.
It's true to size and a really good length - I'm 5'10'' and found it extended just below my backside. So with the collar up and the zip fully fastened, the whole of my neck and torso was well covered and insulated.
It's windproof (at least in some moderate, late April gusts) and I've found it really useful as an insulating layer between a decent base layer and a waterproof/windproof outer layer. It's been perfect for providing additional warmth during several recent surprisingly cool trips around the Kinder Plateau, both when resting and during more active periods tackling the peat groughs when it proved to be pretty breathable too.
The two pockets are both big enough to comfortably take an OS map . . . but unfortunately are not really accessible when you're carrying a backpack since they are positioned just where the backpack belt sits. Weather conditions being what they are, so far I have only had limited use of the Valdres without an outer layer on top of it so I've not yet had much chance to check if there's any abrasion damage from backpack straps - no sign of any wear & tear yet. Will keep you posted.
Thus far, though, I really like the Valdres. It packs down so well that it now has a permanent place in the bottom of my backpack just in case I need some additional insulation and warmth.
Bergan's Valdres is a great means of providing additional insulation during lunch stops on day-walks or for lightweight warmth on longer backpacking and camping trips. It is stylish enough to wear around town when the temperature drops or the wind blows.
