Footpath or Country Walk signpost
Q. What is the difference between a footpath and a country walk sign post.
Can my dog be off lead on either?
Thanks,
Christine Warner, Essex
A. Not sure exactly what you mean but they sound like the same thing.
If the path is signed with yellow arrows it is a footpath. If it is signed with blue arrows it is a Bridleway. If it is signed with some other footpath sign - it is probably a footpath rather than a bridleway.
The type of path (footpath or bridleway) has no bearing on whether dogs (on or off the lead) are permitted or not.
That depends on local restrictions and land usage. Some areas prohibit dogs all year round and others only when ground nesting birds are rearing their young.
In most cases, signs will clearly be displayed indicating whether dogs are permitted or not.
In any event, you should keep your dog under close control at all times as a courtesy to other walkers who may not like dogs - even friendly harmless ones.
