Caiston Beck
Q. According to c351 walk Red Screes, there is no bridge to cross Caiston Beck. Is it therefore not one to venture at this time of year, or can it easily be crossed without a bridge??
Sandra Johnson, Clitheroe
A. Hi Sandra
At the point up Caiston Glen where you need to step across Caiston Beck (Grid Ref: NY 39654 10372) the stream is normally pretty small and easy to cross. This will change after a period of heavy rain and, as always, discretion should be observed.
If you have any doubt about crossing the beck at this point you should not do so and continue SW up the valley to reach Scandale Pass. From Scandale Pass a clear path heads SE up to the summit of Red Screes. You can access Middle Dodd from the summit of Red Screes by heading NNW and then NNE along Smallthwaite Band for about 750m before returning to Red Screes to continue your walk.
This alternative route however will add an extra 2.5km and 110m of ascent to the details shown on Walk c351 Red Screes and Little Hart Crag from Brothers Water and extra time (about 1 hour) should be allowed to cover this.
Hope this helps
