Gps Query
Q. I want to buy a GPS to confirm my location when in cloud. I always carry a map and compass. When I buy a GPS - for it to give me a grid reference of my current location - do I have to also buy mapping software for the GPS and load it on to the GPS? Will a GPS with no mapping software loaded give me my location as a grid reference? I have a comprehensive supply of Explorer maps and don't want any unnecessary expense. Or would it give location in latitude and longitude if it had no maps loaded? This may seem a strange question - but I can't find any information that answers my question! Await replies. Sheena

A. You do not need mapping software on your GPS Device for it to give your location.
Providing you set the position format of your GPS to 'BRITISH GRID' and the map datum to 'ORD SRVY GB' your GPS will give your location as an Ordnance Survey Map Grid Reference to the nearest metre and is accurate to about 25m or so.
Hope this helps . . .
