Legal Issues for Walk Leaders
Q. I am currently organising walks for people who are interested in my office. I have stated in my e-mails inviting people on a walk that they are responsible for their own safety etc as I am not a mountain or walking leader. Are there any legal issues I need to be aware of? As the organiser am I legally responsible in any way?

A. I have spoken to my company's legal eagle - who happens to also be a walker, and he assured me that as its a social thing there are no legal requirements. Hope this helps others.

A. I spoke to the Mountain Leaders Assocation and they told me that I have a duty of care as the organiser - understandable, but no legal responsibilities. To make absolutely sure do you know of anyone else I could contact to double check the legal issues. I am concerned about the potential 'company' issue you raised.

A. IMHO you should get some professional legal advice. Whilst many of us go out walking informally with groups of friends, your trip might be considered to be a 'company' day out which might change your personal situation (and that of your company) if there was an accident.
Hope this helps
