Ref Fully Grown Bull
Q. I am quite new to rambling, and love it very much, especially with my dog. However, I came across a field where the footpath had to go through, which was full of cows, calves and a big bull. I was quite nervous about going through, and we had to find an alternative route due to our having the dog with us - could I have reported the farmer as there were more fields which had bulls and cows in where the footpath went?
Anne Hunter, Scarborough
A. It's legal for the farmer to put a fully grown bull in a field containing a public right of way if the bull in question is a beef breed and is with cows and calves. I'd have done what you did, if it's any consolation, but unless the bull is obviously dangerous, you can't report it to anybody.
