The cross is a memorial to Fanny Mercer, a young servant girl who worked for a schoolteacher from Rugby - a Mr Bowden Smith - and had accompanied him and his family on their summer vacation in the Lake District in September 1887. The party were descending Fleetwith Pike when Fanny slipped and fell. Badly hurt, she was taken to nearby Gatesgarth Farm but sadly died of her injuries before medical assistance could arrive. Her memorial cross stands as a warning to all who venture onto the fells that they can be dangerous and perilous.
