Christina Lander walked up Arenig Fawr (South Top) on May 21st, 2023 [from/via/route] Llyn Arenig - the bothy - Arenig Fawr - Arenig Fawr South top - Craig y Bychau - Amnodd-wen [with] Dick [weather] Sunny day
Melfyn Parry climbed Arenig Fawr (South Top) on September 7th, 2023 [from/via/route] Followed route GW133 - some pointers for other walkers, note 2 refers to a fence, the more noticeable feature is actually a dry stone wall to follow. From Arenig's south top to the south ridge top is tricky in parts due to very boggy areas, I found that following a path to the left of the lake shown on the route map & crossing between the first & second lakes was relatively straight forward. The descent to Ceunant Coch was a drudge, through heather, clumps of grass, reed beds & bog land - reaching the base of Moel Llyfnant was very welcome indeed. From here the ascent of Moel Llyfnant was steep. Once on the top of Moel Llyfnant the rest of the route can be seen, descending to the corner of the forest was again a question of finding your way through some boggy bits & the same is true of the route towards the sheepfold at Craig y Ffolt. The ascent to Foel Boeth & then a short hop over to Gallt y Daren were straight forward. The return route to the car park is a long one a 6.5Km, quite easy to follow the path until you get to (F) on the route map, from here you can see that the suggested route is through boggy land, I found it easier to follow a definite track skirting the forest until you reach a gate, go through this & follow the track through the forest to reach the disused railway track which is then an easy route back to the car. [with] Solo walk [weather] Visibility was generally good. Two very light showers, then becoming sunny. Warm day. - Some of the boggy areas are tricky & as a solo walker great care is required. I did this walk after a period of dry weather, not sure I would want to do it after a sustained period of rain.
