In-use Test:
I wore the Result Performance R120 Soft Shell Activity Jacket for a number of low level walks during UK Autumn in Shropshire. The conditions were mild but damp with light winds.
Materials: The jacket makes use of Result's own Soft Shell technology. The purpose of a 'soft shell' garment is that it combines some of the features of an outer garment (usually windproofness and/or rain resistance) with those of a mid layer fleece.
In this case, the inner layer is a soft micro-fleece that is bonded to an outer polyester/spandex layer via a breathable mid-layer membrane.
An interesting feature is the sleeve lining which extends below the bottom of the cuff. There's a thumb hole in at the end of each which allows the lining (and hence the sleeve) to be anchored snugly around the wrists. Whilst this is a clear advantage in wet and windy weather, the tightness of the wrist elastic makes it difficult to roll-up the sleeves when you need to cool down. However, there are two underarm ventilation zips - so a degree of temperature control is possible.
I wore this in relatively mild conditions with low wind as an outer layer/mid layer - and yes it did keep me quite comfortable.
Fit: I'm 5' 10" and of medium build and was wearing an XL size. The jacket was a very snug fit so I don't think the cut is overly generous. Neither is there a draw-cord at the the hem so there is no way of adjusting the fit. The sleeves were a good length.
Collar: The collar is a good size and can be zipped right up to produce a very nice cosy feel to the garment.
Pockets: There are two large pockets high-up on the front, each large enough to take a folded OS map. Both are well above belt level so can be easily accessed even when wearing a large back-pack.
Zips: There's a full front zip (with a small storm flap) which has a large toggle on it making it easy to use when wearing gloves.
I'd use a garment that offered more warmth for winter/high-level walking. However, the Result Performance R120 Soft Shell Activity Jacket is a good value, windproof garment with some breathability that is a great option for lower level walking in milder, blustery conditions.
