In-use Test:

I wore the Result Performnace Soft Shell jacket over a base layer and used it as an outer layer for a variety of walking/nordic walking trips around Cheshire during the UK Autumn. The conditions were generally dry with light winds.

Materials: The inner layer is soft and feels comfortable against the skin. This inner layer is bonded to an outer layer (a polyester/spandex mix) which did tend to rustle. However the net result is a warm garment that provides a good level of wind-resistance and is fairly breathable.

The ventilation can be improved by opening the pockets and also the 12cm zips at the bottom of the lower front. The cuffs are not adjustable nor are they very stretchy - so rolling-up the sleeves isn't really an option if you're hot.

Fit: I'm 5'7'' and of medium build. The medium size fitted well and I liked its short, semi-fitted style. However, I'd have preferred a little more length in the sleeves. There isn't a draw-cord at the hem which reduces a little the size-adjustment possible although this can be achieved to some extent by the side-zip adjustment.

Collar: The collar can be zipped up to fit snugly beneath your chin. For the fashion conscious, there's also a zip-off interchangeable collar system that comes with 3 additional variations.

Pockets: There are two good sized, zipped, hand warming pockets positioned well so that they can be reached even when wearing a day pack. Also, there's an internal mobile-phone pocket, a small zipped pocket on one of the sleeves (for an iPod or MP3 player perhaps) and another internal pocket. Alas though, there's no pocket large enough for a folded OS map - which I did find rather inconvenient.

Zips: There's a full front zip - however I found this consistently hard to engage.

Buying Advice:

The Result Performance La Femme soft shell jacket is an affordable, wind-proof fleece that offers warmth and some breathability. For me, though, it doesn't offer enough insulation for high-er level, winter walking.

However, its light weight and fitted cut make it a good option for low-level, energetic walking particularly in blustery conditions.
