Y Lliwedd

Q. How easy or difficult is the ascent of Y Lliwedd from the Watkin Path? I love mountains, but am less keen on steep drops!

Hugh Martin, Henfield

A. Y Lliwedd is the 17th highest mountain in Wales and the 26th highest mountain in England and Wales. It lies to the south east of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) across Bwlch Ciliau. There are steep cliffs and crags to the north making an approach from this direction beyond the capabilities of most walkers but you can easily ascend the peak via the north west ridge (from Bwlch Ciliau at the top of the Watkin Path) and the north east ridge via steep rocky mountain paths.

Much less visited than it's more famous neighbour, Y Lliwedd does in fact comprise three distinct 'tops' - Y Lliwedd itself and two minor summits Y Lliwedd (East Top) and Lliwedd Bach. The views from the top are truly spectacular with the bulk of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), Garnedd Ugain (Crib y Ddysgl) and Crib Goch above Llyn Llydaw dominating.

Providing you are reasonably fit and go on a clear, dry day with appropriate clothing and footwear, climbing Y Lliwedd via the Watkin Path from Nantgwynant should be well within your capabilities.
