Who Do I Inform Before I Climb?
Q. Hi I am aware that for safety measures, it is best to inform someone when you set off and return from the climb. Who is it best to inform/where can I do this?
Alison Boyd, Leeds
A. Well, basically you need to inform someone who is likely to notice if you do not return. This might be the proprietor of the B & B, pub or hotel where you are staying (particularly if you have arranged to have an evening meal) or a relative or friend at home whom you can text when you have completed your walk or climb.
What I do when when researching a new walk or re-checking an existing one is to give my wife a copy of my planned route and then text her from all the significant points as I walk them.
Obviously, this approach requires some flexibility since it is not always possible to get a phone signal and it can be several hours between texts. Most of the time I manage to get one though and can certainly pick one up when in the car and on my way home or heading for a campsite.
Hope this helps . . .
