Multi-day Trek In The Cairngorms
Q. I'm an experienced hill walker, looking to do a solo walk of 3 - 5 days (maybe more) in the Cairngorms in September. I'm looking to wild camp for 2/3 nights at a time, breaking that up with hostels and campsites. I'd like something fairly challenging, taking in a few of the higher peaks in the area, but nothing that requires technical climbing. I've never walked in Scotland before, so any suggestions for routes or particular peaks, or good camping spots would be much appreciated. Thanks, Martin

A. How about Lairig Ghru?
Take Walk route map ad126 Glen Dee via White Bridge from Linn of Dee or Walk route map ad125 Corrour Bothy via Derry Lodge from Linn of Dee from Linn of Dee to Corrour Bothy in Lairig Ghru where you can set camp (or stay in the The Bothy itself if the weather turns thick).
From Corrour Bothy you could follow Walk route map ad104 The Devil's Point and Cairn Toul from Corrour Bothy on one day and then Walk route map ad112 Beinn Bhrotain and Monadh Mor from Corrour Bothy on a second day before either following your inward route back to Linn of Dee (if you have a car parked at the large car park there) or continue North along Larig Ghru to emerge near Loch Morlich and Glenmore Forest Park.
I did this backpacking trip with a pal a year or two ago, bagged five Munros . . .
- Cairn Toul (Carn an t-Sabhail)
- Sgor an Lochain Uaine (The Angel's Peak)
- Beinn Bhrotain
- Monadh Mor and
- The Devil's Point
. . . saw some great views (see The Devil's Point from Glen Dee, The Cairngorms National Park, Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and generally had a great time.
I'm sure you will too . . .
