Walking along disused or former Railway Lines
Q. How do you know when a disused [Railway Line] is open for walking or closed? Following a Harvey Map of The Howgills recently I planned to return along such a track, only to be refused entry by the resident of the ex-railway station; this caused me to spend longer than i had wished on a main road.

A. If there is a right of way along a former Railway Line it will be marked on the map as a right of way - which on Ordnance Survey Maps for England and Wales is a green dashed line. If it is not marked as a right of way then it is not a right of way and you are not permitted to walk along it.
Hope this helps . . .
