Pain in Achilles Tendon with New Walking Boots
Q. I just bought new walking boots and they are causing pain in [the] achilles tendon. Feels like bruising, not rubbing. Doesn't hurt unless I wear footwear high enough to push against the affected area.
I have just rested for 2 weeks but can feel the pain as soon as i put the boots back on.
Can anyone offer any advice?

A. ive got this issue now and a great GP explained it to me. Its high back walking boots pressing on the stretched achilles as you walk which causes internal bruising - effectively an RSI. Seems radical but he told me to cut a U shape out of the back centre of my boots - many walking boots already have this ultra low back for this reason. He also explained the damage is done and will need to heal - expect 8-12 weeks of "grumbling"

A. Hi I had this problem which was helped by using foot supports (half ones) which you can buy in Boots (they are blue). Ultimately though I switched to walking shoes and had no further problems !

A. Hi Mathew, I have also just bought a new pair of walking boots and like you my achillies feels like its bruised. I wear any other trainers its fine but a boot or anything with a high back any agony. My boots are the Asolo Flame, dont suppose these were the same as yours. Did you find out what the problem was/is? Gavin

A. Hi Matthew, Did you ever work out what the problem was with your boots? I have exactly the same thing with my new boots, but only on the left foot. Pain feels like bruising on the left heel. Disappears the instant I take the boots off and returns as soon as I put them on again. No sign of actual bruising or rubbing. I'm doing a 4 day trek in 2 weeks time and wondering whether I need to go back to my trusty old boots or whether this is something I can work through in a short space of time. Obviously don't want to risk hurting myself beforehand or on my trek. Any advice much appreciated.
