How To Polish Walking Boots after Dubbin?

Q. Due to bad weather I have been applying a lot of dubbin to my leather riding boots but would now like to polish them again? Is this possible as the dubbin has left quite a thick film? It's entirely possible I've applied it too thickly- anyone have any advice on beat course of action...
