The Leven Viaduct and Kent Viaduct
Q. is the Leven Viaduct and/or Kent Viaduct open to pedestrains?
We are cycling from London to Egremont for charity and it seems its quite a short cut if we can cycle/walk across these 2 viaducts.
if not, is it safe to walk across the sands, assuming the tide is out of course.
Thanks in advance
Barry Hewitt, London
A. The Kent Viaduct is in sight of the signalman at Arnside, he will call the police if he sees anyone trespassing on the viaduct. Also there is no easy road or track off the viaduct at the Grange end. Crossing the sand with a bike is not recommended either, guide or not, as you need to cross rivers that are waist deep at low tide, so you will ruin the bikes.

A. The Kent and Leven Viaducts cross Morcambe Bay in Cumbria. The Kent Viaduct carries the railway line across Milnthorpe Sands from Arnside to Grange-over-Sands and the The Leven Viaduct carries the railway line across Cartmel Sands from Cark & Cartmel to Ulverston.
I think it very unlikely that either open to pedestrian traffic since both are still active train routes.
Walking across the sands of Morecambe Bay (with or without a bike) is extremely dangerous due to the shifting quick sands and rapid onrushing tides. It should not be attempted without a qualified guide.
