Scrambling Rope
Q. I need some advice to purchase a rope for scrambling.
I have a 10x50 rope for climbing but feel that this will be excessive for scrambling purely for weight reasons. Can anyone advise me on what would be a good rope to buy for scrambling in the mountains.

A. I use a 9mm by 50m rope for scrambling. This is perhaps a bit longer than necessary, but the problem is that nobody appears to make a rope specially for scrambling. The 9mm rope is satisfactory used singly for most scrambling, but for extra security can be used double limiting its length to 25m. Being of 9mm diameter, the rope is not too heavy.

A. Chris hall (above) suggests purchasing a 9mm x 50m rope providing the reason that no one makes shorter rope.
It should be noted that FIELD & TREK and other good mountaineering stores will provide a shorter rope, with the best over the counter probably the Mountain Leader Training Board (M.L.T.B.) 8mm x 30m rope which I have used often for scrambling and abseiling/lowering.
I hope this may assist those looking for a shorter rope suitable for scrambling on short routes, or a 'safety rope' which is the purpose of the M.L.T.B. ROPE.
