Mark Davidson walked up Dead Stones on August 8th, 2008 [from/via/route] Walk du152 Great Stony Hill & Dead Stones from Burnhope Reservoir [with] Alone [weather] High white cloud - bit cool for August
Caroline Winter climbed Dead Stones on August 23rd, 2021 [from/via/route] Killhope cross, Nag's Head, Dead Stone's [with] Becky [weather] Low cloud, clearing by late morning & warm & hazy - Straight forward along fence/wall line, but tried short cut over a stile, but featureless boggy terrain convinced us to revert back to fence. On top good views to Cross Fell
Kevin Foster bagged Dead Stones on October 2nd, 2018 [from/via/route] Walk du152 from Burnhope reservoir. [with] Henry. [weather] sunny but very windy. - Great Stony Hill was the first objective of the day & was reached by a steady climb on a stony track up to Coldberry End. Thankfully I had already bagged Three Pikes which looked a long way there & back from where I was standing. After sheltering out of the wind for a quick lunch stop I continued along the ridge fence initially towards Scaud Hill. I diverted below Scaud Hill to investigate the disused bell pits & other extensive evidence of the former mining activity around here which was quite interesting. I regained the ridge fence line near the top of Harwood common & then threaded my way through the peat hags & groughs to the flat top of Burnhope Seat with its trig point mounted on a concrete plinth. The ground about 250 yards due West from the trig point, which was marked by a small cairn, did seem slightly higher but it is only a matter of inches. I then followed the ridge fence line again to a substantial col before a slight rise to the grassy knoll of Dead Stones. Apart from the tall well built cairn this top is notable for a roofed wind shelter complete with a bench & a fireplace to burn the stack of old fence posts I found inside. The ridge descends gradually through more hags & groughs to the fine top (but not a Nuttall) of Highwatch Currack which gave possibly the best view of the day along upper Weardale. Overall a very enjoyable walk.
Darren Mortimer hiked Dead Stones on May 6th, 2017 [from/via/route] Burnhope Reservoir [with] Dermot Palmer [weather] Overcast with the odd sun & windy on the tops. - If Peat Hags are your thing then this walk ( du114 ) is for you
Christine Shepherd summited Dead Stones on April 20th, 2016 [from/via/route] Walked from Burnhope reservoir using walk du114 [with] On my own [weather] Sunny with a lovely breeze. - Quite a lot of peat groughs on the way to this summit. The cairn is quite magnificent & the shelter nearby could prove useful if the weather turned nasty.
Ray O'hara conquered Dead Stones on February 6th, 2013 [from/via/route] B6277 - Burnhope Seat - Dead Stones - Burnhope Seat - B6277 [weather] Deep lying snow, overcast, but at all times the cloud remained above the summits - The col between Burnhope Seat & Dead Stones would normally have been very boggy, but of course it was frozen over when I visited making it much easier to traverse. Nice stone shelter near the summit for a rest out of the wind.
