Are Walking Sticks (Poles) any use?

Hi, I have got to the ripe old age of 57! and feel any help to keep me walking on the moors would help! Can anyone give me any feedback on sticks [Walking Poles]? 1 or 2? They seem very popular and I need some information before I invest? I have only 2 hands and need they both for map reading and GLASSES!!. Do sticks [Walking Poles] get in the way?? Please give me some advice! Many Thanks!
