Trek Mates says:"The aluminium 3 part pole should give years of service if you follow these care instructions: • Do not over extend the pole i.e past the stop signs • Do not over tighten pole. • Poles can be taken apart & washed in clean water. Using a pair of Trekking poles offers greater stability and comfort. Trekmates® Trekking poles are fully telescopic so can be adjusted to suit the terrain and user. Reducing pressure on knees, legs, hips and lower spine. Increasing your power on steep inclines and reducing stress on your thighs and lower legs when descending."
In-use Test:
In my experience, there are only two types of walker - those who use walking poles and those who haven't tried walking with poles yet. I had my 'Damascean' moment a few years ago and since then I always walk with at least one. I find it just helps to give a little extra stability and confidence . . . and if I need two hands I can compress the pole and attach it to my back-pack via the ice-axe loops.
I've used the Trek Mates Peak Walker Walking Poles on largely hard-packed or asphalt surfaces with longish uphill and downhill sections.
The grip fitted my hand quite well although - after the best part of a day - it did start to feel quite hard in ungloved hands. The traction was good and the shock absorbing system did its job reasonably well - although you can't turn it off, which would be useful on longer up-hill sections.
The basket at the bottom is solid and was useful in mud to stop the pole sinking.
I was able to adjust the poles easily during the day and when I needed both hands, they telescoped down to 65cm which is an easily stowable length.
Excellent value. If you're at the stage of experimenting with walking poles for Spring Summer or Autumn walking - then give the Trek Mates Peak Walker Walking Poles a go.
