Points of Interest/Notes on this walk:
Howk Bobbin Mill made bobbins* for the textile industry from 1857 until 1924 & was one of the most northerly of more than 100 bobbin mills in Cumbria. At one time Lakeland mills accounted for about half the bobbins produced in Britain. Howk Bobbin Mill also made pickaxe handles, spokes for cart wheels and washing dollies. It had the largest waterwheel in the country - some 12.8m (42ft) in diameter & 1m (3ft) wide. *A bobbin is a spindle or cylinder, with or without flanges, on which wire, yarn, thread or film is wound.
