Answer a walking and hiking question

Got an answer to the following Walking/Hiking question?

Walking Boots for the Inca Trail and South America

Hi there, I'm kitting out my 19 year old son for a trip round South America followed by the Inca Trail (which we're all doing).

Field and Trek said that Meindl Talos XCR boots would be ideal so we bought them. But I felt they may not be robust enough so I called Meindl and they said they were only suitable for soft walking.

Field and Trek said they'd exchange them and suggested the Salomon Quest. Please can you advise? I don't trust F and T! I have heavy Meindl boots for your excellent walks in the UK but wonder if Salomon Authentics would be better for the Inca Trail.

We're really confused because there's so much conflicting advice.
