Answer a walking and hiking question

Using Public Transport For Walking Hiking And Rambling

I have used several of the walk plans you provide since finding your site and taking out a subscription, and have found the website to be a real treasure and the walk information both accurate and helpful.

As neither my wife nor I drive we have always used public transport to access the areas we wish to visit and find that many of the circular walks that you publish (obviously to return users to their vehicles) can be adapted or joined to others to give a 'point to point' walk that will shorten the route for less experienced walkers or take you to a return journey by a different route.

Day tickets that cover large areas such as GMPTE's Wayfarer cost £16.80 for two adults and used with Derbyshire Transports detailed timetables give an immense amount of freedom of movement around the Peak area with reliable returns to the Manchester area until quite late.

A typical day out for us will mean leaving home about 08:00 and arriving home by 21:00 with a good 6 or more hour walk and a pub visit included (not so inviting when driving afterwards).

The point I wish to make at the end of this is that it may be helpful to include a note of local transport services to each destination for non drivers or wishful drinkers thereby encouraging people to get out when they may have thought it too difficult otherwise.

e.g. Transport to Hulme End yesterday from Manchester was the Transpeak service at 09:00 as far as Buxton connecting with the 442 at the same stop to Hulme End arriving at 11:00 leaving time for a walk round the Manifold valley and a visit to the Manifold Inn before the return service at 16:13 (there was a later one at 19:33 both with connections to trains at Buxton and all covered by the Wayfarer ticket).

I hope this suggestion is helpful as we have recieved so much help in our planning from your excellent site.

Kindest Regards

Kevin And Maggie Lavelle
