Staffies - Nature or Nurture
I happened upon this website when looking for dog owners views on other dogs running free when out walking. I noted that a qualified Vet, Mr Etrice, has made several remarks about SBT, and the damage they cause when fighting with other dogs.
In defence of these wonderful dogs, I would like to say that, as always, it is the owners, not the dogs that should be in the measure of 'dangerous'.
Yes, the potential for harm, as these are breeds that were bred for hunting, is great, but they are extremely intelligent animals and loyal and loving - in the right hands. This breed are particularly ill treated and being a vet you should be aware of this more than anyone else. We have had experience of a well treated and wonderful staffie but since she passed away, have taken on a rescue staffie who deserved to have a good home but cannot be let off his lead. He is terribly fearful of other dogs and noise phobic for being left in police kennels for 18 months.
When we are out walking our dog, we have to suffer other peoples dogs running around and 'hide' until they pass - it is a struggle every day - but he is worth every second.
Why, do people not consider that side of the story - how these poor animals have been treated to make them so fearful and angry - they arent born this way.
As usual it is the careful management of the owners, never the dogs.
Send it in and we will post it in the Your Stories section of The Bunkhouse.
