Walking from Deepdale Hause to Hartsop Above How
Q. Is there a path or an obvious route from Deepdale Hause to Hartsop Above How without going over Fairfield and Hart Crag? Thank you.
David Hemingway, Leicester
A. I assume you want to bag to Sunday Crag and Hartsop Above How without climbing over Fairfield and Hart Crag?
I don't know of a path that links the two and there isn't one marked on the 1:25000 scale OS Map for the area - but that doesn't mean it is not possible.
If you follow Walk c235 The Deepdale Horseshoe from Patterdale, the section between Deepdale Hause and the col SW of Hartsop Above How via Fairfield and Hart Crag is 3.75km with 253m of ascent and 378m of descent.
If you take a more direct route from Deepdale Hause to the col SW of Hartsop Above How via the head of Deepdale Common via Sleet Cove, Cawk Cove and Link Cove but taking great care to avoid the crags of Hog Hole, Black Tippet, Hutaple Crag, Greenhow End and Erne Nest Crag - it is 2.5km with 164m of ascent and 287m of descent.
However, the second, lower level route will require good navigation skills and might be across rough pathless ground (possibly very boggy - particularly after the summer of rain we have had) and you will have to negotiate the crossing of at least half a dozen streams and becks - which may be in spate and impassable. Furthermore, the descent from Deepdale Hause into Cawk Cove looks very steep and tricky.
So the choice is 3.75km of walking with 253m of ascent on clear, easy to follow paths that are firm and rocky underfoot - or 2.5km of walking with 164m of ascent on rough, boggy pathless ground with streams and becks in spate to negotiate.
Hope this helps
