Walking Guide For Helvellin Striding Edge
Q. Hi I am toying with the idea of having a go at this next year with some friends - can anybody suggest a good guide/leader to take us at a reasonable cost?
Nick Gibson, Chatham
A. Striding Edge is a thin, narrow, very exposed, rocky arete with steep drops on both sides on the eastern approach to Helvellyn - England's 3rd highest mountain. Access is usually made from Patterdale and Glenridding.
Like Marmite, while some walkers and hikers just love it and see it as a challenge, others are left in a quivering wreck, unable to move. For those who find the traverse of Striding Edge beyond them, Swirral Edge to the North of Red Tarn offers a still challenging but less exposed alternative.
In any event, Striding Edge should only be attempted by walkers and hikers with the proper equipment, including Walking and Hiking Boots designed for the job. Don't attempt Striding Edge at all in poor or thick weather.

Hope this helps and good luck . . .
