Snowdon In October!
Q. I am looking to walk up Snowdon in mid/late October. What are the conditions like and which is the best route? Thanks.
Louise Coles, Fleet
A. Conditions are very changeable. The wind is a major element weather up there so the weather can change in minutes. I did Llanderis path in feb, plenty of snow at summit with thick cloud, temperature dropped a lot half way up, so had to add layer of clothing. Path very un even in places so good pair of boots a must and it rains most of the time so good waterproofs is a must. Treck up and down took approx. five and a half hours though I have done it a lot quicker in better conditions. Good to have a map and compass if you don't know the mountain due to steep sides near the summit also was difficult at times to see path and edges dew to snow and cloud. Amazing on a clear day.

A. You can get snow on the summit of Snowdon in October so it is advisable to make sure you and every member of your party is equipped with a crampons, ice-axe and knowledge on how to use them both.
For advice on what to take with you up Snowdon see What to Take - Nutritional Requirements and What to Take - Essential Items.
For advice on what to wear on Snowdon see What to Wear - Clothing and What to Wear - Footwear for the outdoors.
Also, just in case, see Dealing with emergencies - First Aid and Incident Management for Walkers, Hikers and Ramblers
For all the best walk routes up Snowdon see Walk Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) though you might want to avoid Crib Goch on this occasion.
Also, bear in find that the days are considerably shorter in October than in the summer months.
Hope this helps
