Walking up Snowdon with a Child

Q. My eleven year old son and I are very keen to walk up Snowdon in May/June and would be grateful for any suggestions - nothing too taxing but we are both fit and able to cope with long distances. We would also be keen to camp somewhere and make a round trip of it back.

A. I took my son up Snowdon a couple of years ago when he was nine. We went up the PYG track and back down the Miners' - walk gw134 Mount Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) avoiding Crib Goch from Pen y Pass and from a stamina point of view he was absolutely fine and enjoyed the challenge.

It was August - and on the way up it was pouring with rain and very low visibility - on the summit it was down to a few metres. As soon as we started the descent the cloud started to lift, the rain cleared, and only then could he see what he'd really achieved.

My partner took his daughter, then aged 12, up via Rhyd Ddu and down via Snowdon Ranger - walk gw107 Mount Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) & Yr Aran from Rhyd Ddu quieter than some routes and again perfectly achievable.

The campsite linked to the Cwellyn Arms in Rhyd Ddu is a fantastic place to stay - view of Snowdon, on the edge of a reservoir (lots of skimming stones) and firepits. Just watch out for the price of the beer in the pub!

HI , I went last year up the llanberris ( tourist path ) to the summit of snowdon an 11 year old should have no probs this is the easiest and safest route to the top , however you will still need the right gear boots etc , I stayed ata camp site called llyn gwynant , a very scenic site at the side of a lake just google llyn gwynant , its not far from pen y pass and the bus routes to llanberris , and its pretty cheap and well run .
