Fellwalking on Blencathra with Kids
Q. My boys are 9 & 11. We are fairly new to fell walking - but very keen, and like a challenge. which is the best route to tackle Blencathra?
Julie Mcquire, Cleator
A. See Walk Blencathra (or Saddleback) and Walks on Ordnance Survey Map OL5 for the best choice of walks.
c170 Blencathra from Threlkeld makes a direct approach up the Hall's Fell Ridge but you might consider c117 Blencathra and Knowe Crags (Blease Fell) via Sharp Edge from Scales or the truly terrific c191 The Glendermackin Round from Mungrisdale.
These latter two walks both include alternatives to the notorious 'Sharp Edge' - a precipitous knife-edge that should definitely be avoided by anyone who does not have a good head-for-heights - and avoided altogether by everyone in thick or icy weather. Click here for some photos of Sharp Edge.
Hope this helps
