Pyg Track or Miners Track up Snowdon
Q. Pyg Miners - Of the two routes mentioned or their any major differences and if so what are they?
Alan Meadwell, Wigan
A. The PYG Track and The Miners' Track both approach Snowdon from Pen-y-Pass and join together above Glaslyn (a lake) before the final very steep section up onto the Snowdon summit area.
Both paths are relatively level as far as Glaslyn but while the lower Miners' Path is a track that skirts along the shores of Llyn Llydaw, the higher Pyg Track is a proper rocky mountain path.
See Walking Map gw134 Mount Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) avoiding Crib Goch from Pen y Pass for a walk up Snowdon that uses them both or Walking Map gw154 Llyn Llydaw and Glaslyn via the PYG Track and Miners' Track for a walk that enables anyone to experience both paths but without the final steep climb on to Snowdon - ideal as a poor weather alternative.
Incidentally, the PYG Track is so named beacuse it connects Snowdon with the Pen y Gwryd Hotel at the bottom of the Pass.
Hope this helps . . .
