Climbing Helvellyn
Q. Hi I am a keen walker and reasonably fit but have no experience of british peaks. I am very interested in climbing Helvellyn. Do you think this is achievable for someone of my experience. Any advice?
Georgina Grimwood, Dartford Kent
A. Hi Georgina, Helvellyn is a glorious walk and I have done it a few times, once with three children in tow! I find the best walk (although a busy one in the summer months)is a type of horseshoe circuit: starting from Patterdale/Glenridding and ascending via Striding Edge (take care here if windy or icy) returning in a southerly direction over the tops - Nethermost Pike, High Crag and Dollywaggon Pike, dropping to Grisedale Tarn. From where it is an easy hike returning in a north-easterly direction following Grisedale Beck to Patterdale.
Graham Careford, Enfield
A. Pick a nice warm day that is not too hot and follow Walk c432 Helvellyn from Thirlmere - which is the easiest route.
And make sure you read and follow the advice in Hill Skills - What to Wear and What to Take and you should be fine.
Just take it nice and easy - we all have to start somewhere!
Hope this helps . . .
